Ambler Children’s Centre, Islington, London N1

New Children’s Centre to Ambler Infants and Primary School

A new Children’s Centre was constructed to provide 60 nursery places, with the refurbishment of an existing Victorian building to provide extended day services, as well as community and outreach facilities.

The design carefully links separate areas with defined uses, to ensure seamless transition between early year’s provisions up to primary schooling. The spaces have been created to provide flexibility for its users, giving the control of light for the sleeping patterns of young children, and covered external play spaces, all key aspects for the client’s educational programme.

The new building was detailed with young children in mind (low windows, padded floors, colours of finishes), as well as embodying our focus on sustainability to reduce its environmental impact; incorporating underfloor heating, substantial insulation and deep overhangs, which minimises heat loss in winter and solar gain in summer, along with sustainable-source timber cladding and other environmentally-friendly finishes.

The surrounding primary school remained in full operation during construction.
