Major refurbishment and landscaping of a church and community centre

In November 2014, Potter & Holmes embarked on a year long renovation project of the Victorian built Ealing Green Methodist Church. The church committee wanted to extend their mission beyond their congregation and open the church up to the wider community. The focus of the work was therefore to create not only an uplifting and inspiring place of worship, but a space that functioned as a meeting place for a wide variety of community groups, from Alcoholics Anonymous to Ballet classes.

What we did:

Our priority was to firstly reconfigure the church to create a much more natural flow around the building. We added a sympathetic rear extension to provide a much needed welcoming area where people can meet and socialise. And now for the first time, the church has adequate space to offer a Night Shelter for the homeless.

We also completely renovated the interior of the main church space to create a truly functional, flexible area. We opened up the church and this, combined with intelligently used specialist lighting, now creates a soring sense of height and space.

Externally, we landscaped the front gardens, giving people from the community somewhere to come and relax. A ramp through the gardens up to the entrance gives easy access for all to the church.

The final alteration was to reinstate the magnificent gothic style arched doorway. By doing this we created an entrance befitting of a social place of worship that sits right at the heart of its community.

“This renovation and landscaping project at Ealing Green Church has succeeded in creating an uplifting place of worship and opening up the building to the wider community. It is used by over 400 members of the public per week with its step free access ranging from rehearsal space for the Ealing Symphony to an overnight shelter for up to 20 homeless people. It has acted as a catalyst for other Methodist church projects.”
