Competition entry for the creation of a Parish Centre
Potter Church & Holmes were invited by the Diocese to submit a proposal for the creation of a parish centre next to St. Tarcisius Church. The church committee wanted to create a friendly, uplifting & modern addition fit for the future. We focused on creating a phased approach enabling the current community hall to be retained during the works, thus sustaining the relationships with the existing users.
What we did:
We proposed a new building which presented a warm and friendly face to the street, whilst remaining subservient to the existing church. Our priority was creating sensitive, useful links to the original building through transparent and light materials in addition to external landscaping.
Externally, we proposed an enlarged car park to the rear and a drop off zone with level access to the front to improve access for all. The new hall within the Parish Centre links directly to the south facing gardens to encourage its use throughout the year. When the existing community hall is removed we proposed a path east to west across the site linking Grand Avenue & Lower Charles Street.
