Winchester House, Location Bloomsbury, London WC1

Refurbishment and roof extension to a Georgian period building

Winchester House needed extensive refurbishment to convert the building into a series of comfortable, bright, fully accessible offices with access onto a terrace at the rear arranged over six storeys.

Located in the heart of Bloomsbury, the offices now benefit from an additional floor which has no impact on the street facing elevation. Our approach was to incorporates and restore original features where possible, including stone entrance steps and a bespoke wooden pigeon holes for post.

The complex refurbishment involved inserting new services, a new lift serving all floors, and modernising existing roof openings with walk on roof lights. On a tight budget, we were appointed to provide a full architectural service including securing a planning application and administering the building contract.

This hitherto scruffy eyesore is once more a gracious element of the historic townscape adjoining the town centre as well as an important generator of local employment and contributor to the area’s wealth.
