A suite of temporary accommodation and Academy facilities in the listed Carlyle Building provides the Chelsea Academy with an operational school whilst the new building is developed offsite. We worked closely with the sponsors and the school principal to define the brief, get planning permission for the temporary buildings and listed building consent for refurbishment works.

The design and landscaping has created an innovative learning environment to be continued in the permanent academy, where the children are involved in environmental outcomes and decisions. The refurbishment work on the Carlyle building was designed for future use for the local community after the Academy’s departure. A redundant entrance was reopened with finishes faithfully restored to their original glory. The building was occupied throughout so work was carefully phased and successfully managed to reduce impact on those using the building.
