New diving centre and timber framed family home in Cornwall

Set in a 120-acre farm site in rural Cornwall, Porthkerris is a five-bedroomed new self build family home with an indoor diving pool, designed to the latest sustainable low energy standards. When it came to designing this modern eco-friendly home, we were mindful to incorporate design cues from a whole range of traditional local structures, to help the property sit comfortably in its surroundings.

A harbour wall, for example, was the inspiration behind the curved retaining wall that leads you up to the property and sets it into the natural landscape. The steep pitch of the natural slate roof not only stands up to the harsh local weather conditions, it helps the house blend in with the traditional vernacular of nearby Cornish properties. The family can also add solar panels in the future if they prefer to further bolster the building’s low energy credentials. But the most striking feature is the central tower which evokes memories of picturesque church steeples, tin mine chimneys and lighthouses all of which are characteristic of the Cornish coast. Finally, large panes of glass connect the house to the wonderful sea views beyond as well as allowing it to benefit from winter solar gain. The result is a modern family home that is not only low-energy but that has architectural integrity and that is sympathetic to its surroundings.
